While it would be tempting to think that a world famous sleep doctor and the founding trainer for Soul Cycle would be an obvious choice to write this book, nothing could be further from the truth.

When Stacey and I met at a lecture I was giving, our mutual backgrounds certainly opened the door for a connection, but it was our deeply personal experiences that made this book a reality.

In talking about fitness I shared with Stacey that I had three unexpected cardiac events in ONE night. After going through what was to be sure, one of the most harrowing nights of my life, I was sent home. My friend and colleague Dr. Oz got me an appointment with one of the top heart doctors at UCLA and he said something I'll never forget.

How could that be? I'd just been rushed to the emergency room in an ambulance with shortness of breath and cardiac pain; I blacked out three times on the way. I believed I was fit, sure, and knew I was not overweight, or an alcoholic, and tried to always make good health choices, but had he looked at the right chart? Something serious had happened to me. I needed answers.

The doc continued to explain: "I know you came here for a deeper look at your heart and maybe even to talk about a pacemaker as suggested by your ER physician, but the reality is that you don't need one, you need to take a look at your stress and anxiety levels and do something fast, before you do have an issue that can't be fixed with lifestyle changes."

The Sleep Doctor got a wake up call.

When I told Stacey that story, she was jumping out of her skin trying to tell me her story.

Stacey is a founding instructor at SoulCycle which means she has to maintain high energy and intensity throughout the day to motivate up to 200 people counting on her to lead their fitness journey. She is the epitome of fit.
